Posting #3 of my road trip from Fremantle to Kununurra, Western Australia.

This post contains images from my express visit to Coral Bay and Exmouth, Western Australia.

Ah, the tropics 🙂

These next three images are from Coral Bay – a stunning and simple place.

The front of the image is shallow water over a sand substrate; this then abruptly drops off into a deepish lagoon which is protected by Ningaloo Reef (Australia’s “other” reef) in the background. © 2014 Andrew McInnes.

Unfortunately I only spent about 8 hours in Exmouth which is nowhere near sufficient. Nevertheless, here are some scenes of this fascinating area.

A light-painting of the retired (non-functioning) Vlamingh Head Lighthouse – Exmouth. The evening air was thick with moisture from the Indian Ocean as it pounded Ningaloo Reef so I thought I’d make an image to suggest how the light from the lighthouse may have appeared to mariners of yore. During the 30 second exposure I mimicked a beam of light from the lighthouse by aiming my spotlight on the structure for a few seconds, allowing the moisture in the air to appear as a beam.
This image includes the Southern Cross (and pointers), along with a portion of the Milky Way.

Two views of Perth, Western Australia – January 2014

A bit of a delay in getting these two images up :/

Two views of the Perth skyline across the Swan River. I hope you enjoy them.

That is it for now. Cheers.

Blackwood River Valley Region and Geographe Region – Australia’s South West

The purpose of this particular trip was that I planned to do some long-exposure night images to capture the Orionid meteor shower with a light-painting of the ubiquitous grass-tree in the foreground. Unfortunately my planning was awry so only managed to get a few shots before the rising sun burnt-out the stars. Alas, no meteors included in the images but I am well-pleased with the resultant grass-tree images.

On the drive to the region we passed through the Geographe Region and a wonderful little ruin near the town of Boyanup. We captured some images of this ruin during the day and determined we would return to “light-paint” the building and its associated trees that night.

Here is the ruin by day

Great Southern Region – Australia’s South West

The Great Southern Region of Western Australia’s South West contains rolling pastoral landscapes, mountain ranges, rivers and streams, and forested cliffs abutting the seemingly relentless Southern Ocean. There are also delightful cosy coves, tranquil inlets, and calm bays – it is primarily a few portions of the stunning coast that I share in this photo-blog.

Aptly named “Elephant Rocks.”

“Photo’s from the road, or very close to it.” Western Australia.

I have returned from a brief but wonderful trip to Western Australia whereby my wife and I drove in excess of 5,000 km (>3,100 miles) over a 10 day period, covering but a portion of the state of Western Australia. Departing from Perth we drove south to around Mandura, east to Northam, then over to the coast through Geraldton to Shark Bay. From there we continued north, before travelling east through to Newman then back south to Northam then Perth. I am going to be posting several photo-blogs which will capture our trip.

This particular photo-blog presents photo’s taken from the roadside, or very close to it, and in no particular geographic or chronologic order other than to represent the condition of the landscape at our time of visiting (excepting the first image which was mid-way through our trip). Hope you enjoy the trip vicariously.

A very quick trip to Australia enabled some early morning shots (4:45 am for several of these). The location is on the upper NSW coast, late September, 2011.

"A Pacific Ocean dawn." Canon 7D with Canon 10-22mm lens at ISO 100. 30 seconds at f/4.

"Pandanus, beach, and sunrise" over the Pacific. Canon 7D and Canon 10-22mm lens at ISO 100. 6 seconds at f/5.6.

"Boulders and waves 1." Canon 7D with Canon 10-22mm lens at ISO 100. 1.3 seconds at f/14.

A smattering of scenics (and other “pretty” things).

Here are just a few images, primarily scenic, but also some other “pretty things”, from Australia, Belize, Kazakhstan, and the USA.

The color in this image on the Caspian Sea (Kazakhstan) is due to light interacting with dust particles blown off the surrounding desert – lots of nutrients for primary production in this sea.

An avian assortment.

Ah, a little free time for me having just completed the draft of my Master of Marine Resources Management Thesis! Typically I like to spend my “discretionary” time outside, often as a birdwatcher; however, it is mid-summer and we are deep in drought so not a lot going on other than “resident” species. Therefore, I have selected an assortment of the bird species I have photographed to share with you. The images were shot either in Australia, Belize, or the USA.

Enjoy!
