Day 8 – Fiordland and Cascade Creek, New Zealand – December 2015

Ah, to have more time to explore and be awed by Fiordland National Park! And a revisit in late winter/early spring is in order too.
We ventured along the Te Anau – Milford Highway, to hike the Key Summit, a day-hike portion of the Routeburn Track, beginning at The Divide. Spectacular!

Here is a portion of the view from the end of Key Summit.

Driving into Fiordland National Park in the morning we noticed a field of lupins and thought that it would be worth a look on the way out that evening. What a beautiful scene it turned out to be!

This is Cascade Creek, along the Te Anau-Milford Hwy.

A little bit of Grand ‘ole Texas – a photo-tour.

Recently we had two friends from overseas visit with us at our home in Texas. Unfortunately their time in this great state was very limited  so we were unable to show them much of Texas. To compensate, we instead created a ‘photo-journey’ through some of the diversity and grandeur contained within this state.

From the Gulf of Mexico and coastal marshes,  to the Hill Country and on through to the mountains of West Texas…

If you are lucky (and perhaps brave), you might be fortunate enough to have the local stingrays pay you a visit – as they did here to my lovely wife. Although massive, these are “gentle” creatures – the worst you may experience is them nom-nomming (chewing) on your toes 🙂

Ah, the primary image I originally went to Castle Rock for: A light painting with stars and meteorite.
I had to rock-hop in a mad dash once I set the self timer for the exposure in order to position myself such that the shadows/light source were creating the feel I wanted. Thankfully no falls or broken ankles!

This fine ship is the STS Leeuwin II (sail training ship) whose home-berth is Fremantle.

I had the great privilege and pleasure to sail onboard her as an officer in my early 20’s – I was thrilled she was at dock for a portion of my recent visit to Freo. She is a a three-masted barquentine of 55 meters (~ 180 feet) displacing 344 tonnes with a mast height of 33 meters (~ 108 feet). Having been atop the mast underway I can assure you it is quite spectacular and ‘whippy’ up there!

Whilst wandering around the amazing residential side-streets I came upon this doorway which had a particularly Indian (sub-continent) look to it – or at least that is how it struck me. I think this might well be my next book-mark for my paper books.

Still on the side-streets…

For this image I wanted to convey a soft and ethereal feel using the asparagus fern so I chose a wide-open aperture, elevated the camera and shot downwards so that only the top (nearest) frond would be in focus – I think it worked, but do you too?

I chose a large aperture (small opening) to ensure maximum depth-of-field as I needed the three-dimensional aspect to really capture what I saw. This image suggests Asia for me (the terraced gardens). How about you?

A mate of mine, Paul Waite (http://www.paulwaitephotography.com/#) – a phenomenal photographer based in Fremantle – took me to the abandoned (and VERY eerie) Fremantle Power Station for a light-painting shoot. Unfortunately access is prohibited so we couldn’t get inside and shoot the amazing ruined interior and all its rust, glass, and graffiti. However, it became an exercise in capturing the forbidden access to this huge old building and surrounds.

For this light-painting the building was already illuminated by some street lights over a rise to the right of frame, hence the two-toned building (I thought it was not only fortuitous how it matched the building’s horizontal lines, but also added an extra dimension to the “wierdness” that eminated from this place). I used a LED light to bring attention to the fence (the blue or ‘cool temperature’ of the LED lights adds to the cold metallic physical structure of the fence and razor-wire and the mental picture of its purpose)!

The Red Wattlebird is a “honeyeater” – a group of birds which have highly developed brush-tipped tongues adapted for nectar feeding on numerous plants including this kangaroo paw flower (kangaroo paw plants are endemic to the south-west of Western Australia).

Up the road a little is a beautiful “terrace” beach at Yanchep, parts of which are sheltered by a reef which is delightfully overwashed. The image below shows this reef and placid waters immediately shoreward – we commented immediately that this is a wonderful spot for children to explore, enjoy, and hopefully be moved to curiosity.

“Photo’s from the road, or very close to it.” Western Australia.

I have returned from a brief but wonderful trip to Western Australia whereby my wife and I drove in excess of 5,000 km (>3,100 miles) over a 10 day period, covering but a portion of the state of Western Australia. Departing from Perth we drove south to around Mandura, east to Northam, then over to the coast through Geraldton to Shark Bay. From there we continued north, before travelling east through to Newman then back south to Northam then Perth. I am going to be posting several photo-blogs which will capture our trip.

This particular photo-blog presents photo’s taken from the roadside, or very close to it, and in no particular geographic or chronologic order other than to represent the condition of the landscape at our time of visiting (excepting the first image which was mid-way through our trip). Hope you enjoy the trip vicariously.

35 images over 35 hours – in the heart o’ Texas

Thirty five hours driving and photographing around Eden (and Brady, Pontontoc, Castell, and Menard), Texas with Ken Zoller.

Although my total trip time was 35 hours, the images in this blog essentially follow the progression of actual shooting time from 11 pm on June 1st through 1 am on June 3rd, though the order of images may not necessarily be strictly as shot.

Thanks for taking this photo journey with me!

My images are available through my website:

Two days, two nights, and 942 miles in Central Texas.

‘Tis wildflower season in Texas! I was fortunate to have a few days and nights to spend traipsing around the Llano area. Truly beautiful, especially after the brutal drought of 2011. Thanks to Ken Zoller for his scouting and company during parts of this shoot.
Enjoy.

Some images from March, 2012

I haven’t been able to get out and about as much as I would like to lately. However, here is a (rather eclectic) assortment of images taken during March, 2012.

Texas Bluebonnets heralding Spring.
Canon 7D with Canon EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. f18 at 1/25 second - hand-held. ISO 400.

Ranch-road bridge after the storm, near Chappell Hill, Texas.
Canon 30D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f11 at 1/25 second. ISO 400.

Two Curves - near Chappell Hill, Texas.
Canon 7D with Canon EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. f11 at 1/40 second. ISO 250.

Back in Texas - between Anahuac and High Island.
Canon 30D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f14 at 1/500 second - hand-held. ISO 250.

Red-winged Blackbird on papyrus plant in our yard (I am a bird lover after all).
Canon 7D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f5.6 at 1/250 second. ISO 400.

Red-winged Blackbird on golden dewdrop plant in our yard.
Canon 30D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f5.6 at 1/80 second. ISO 500.

Let’s finish with a series of “baby” images:

What's not to like about babies and their little feet and toes?
Canon 30D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f6.3 at 1/4000 second - don't ask me why ( I had just gone from indoors to outdoors and hadn't adjusted camera settings yet). ISO 800, hand-held. This image has had the background cloned to black for effect - extremely rare that I would alter an image other than standard image processing.

Daddy's big toe = baby's foot.
Canon 30D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f8 at 1/320 second - handheld, ISO 1000 .

Mother's hand and baby's foot.
Canon 7D with Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. f5 at 1/320 second - handheld. ISO 1600.
